Corfu, route to the south

The southern part of Corfu is characterized by sandy beaches, well organized and with all the services; but it lacks the hills that are found throughout the rest of the island instead.
Departing from Corfu town let’s track a route that makes us discover the most important and beautiful destinations of this part of the island.

GASTOURI and BENITSES
The first stop is undoubtedly the Achilleion villa in the village of Gastouri, famous for being the palace of the Empress Sissi, who has taken refuge in Corfu after the death of his son Rudolph. Built in neoclassical style in 1891, inside there are many styles re-exhumed, perhaps too many. In the sixties the villa became a casino and only in the nineties, the villa was opened to the public. The opening hours are from 08:00 to 19:00 in summer, while the rest of the year from 09:00 to 15:30.
A few miles south there is one of the most famous beaches, particularly among the British, in the small village of Benitses. Although not one of the major centers of Corfu and with a flavor typically greek, it is a village that offers everything a tourist might want.

AGIOS IOANNIS PERISTERON and MORAITIKA
Not far away you can visit and use as a basis for movement this other very popular tourist destination, that is Agios Ioannis Peristeron. Also this village is spread in front of the beach and is a place where you can relax and enjoy the sea in peace.
If you want a place more popular, move further southwards to Moraitika, the largest town in the southern coastal area of Corfu, which is growing increasingly year after year and is well equipped for those traveling with children. This area also has been inhabited since Neolithic times and you can also see the ruins of a temple dated III century BC.
Moraitika is expanding so rapidly to have virtually incorporated Messoghi, a village that lies beyond the river itself.

LAKE KORISSION and LEFKIMI
Further down first we cross the Korission Lake, around which you can find traditional villages, as well as quiet areas where you spend a few hours of relaxation.
Next stage is Lefkimi, a rather large town which gives its name to the entire region, with a picturesque town and vegetation of olive trees and vineyards growing in the plains around. Even Lefkimi is crossed by a river and under the only bridge that crosses it you can admire the boats moored there by the local fishermen.

KAVOS
Last stop is Kavos, the most developed village in the region of Lefkimi, and the place par excellence of the entertainment in Corfu. And in fact, it is the favorite destination of young people and its nightlife is rich and suitable for all tastes. The town is practically deserted in winter, it consists only of hotels, bars and clubs that stay open until night in the summer. The sandy beach is busy both day and night and all this leads to advise those seeking a holiday of peace and relaxation not to go to Kavos.
For those wishing to add a gem of culture, not far from Kavos, near the Cape of Asprokavos, is the fortified monastery of Panagia Arkoudila, which due to its location, offers a breathtaking panorama.
